Volunteer with CAL
Over the past few months we've had the pleasure of meeting with friends and collaborators old and new through monthly meetups at ICA LA. Many folks have expressed interest in helping catalyze CAL, so this newsletter is dedicated to ways to participate and volunteer your time and skills.
The CAL working group meeting takes place the second Tuesday of each month at 1pm via zoom. Each 90-minute meeting features a full agenda of relevant topics to the operations of CAL for the first hour, closing out with calls for participation on various tasks. The second part of our meetings feature volunteer-led teach-ins on topics relevant to the kind of organizing and world-building we’re engaged in. This Tuesday, August 8, Corrina Peipon will be sharing knowledge on The 7 Cooperative Principles. If you want to be informed about and attend working group meetings, please email us at info@contemporaryartleague.com.
We know not everyone interested in helping out can make it to our monthly meeting. Signing up as a volunteer doesn’t mean you are required to attend the meetings. If you’re registered as a volunteer, you’ll always be sent the notes following each meeting. Reading the notes constitutes participation; even better, reading the notes and then reaching out with input on what you read there, or emailing us to let us know you want to help with a specific task are perfectly great ways to get involved and help build CAL.
Attending meetings, reading notes, and helping us achieve our ever-evolving to-do list all constitutes time logged toward CAL membership. We ask all volunteers to track the time they put into CAL so that we can acknowledge this work once we have our membership structure in place.
If the timing or the structured format of our monthly working group aren’t a good fit for you, consider joining us IRL at our monthly gathering. CAL IRL @ ICA LA is an informal meetup to share space with folks interested in building a better future for art workers throughout Los Angeles County. The next gathering is Saturday, August 26. There is no set agenda, so drop in any time 11am-1pm for drinks and snacks and conversation. And while you’re there, see the great new summer exhibition cycle with solo exhibitions by Carmen Argote, Alberta Whittle, and Trương Công Tùng. Admission to ICA LA is always free :)
Another way to volunteer is to amplify the work we’re doing. This could come in many forms: invite your friends to join you at one of our monthly CAL IRL @ ICA LA gatherings; forward The Art Worker (this newsletter!) to friends and colleagues who might be interested; and follow us on Instagram and like, comment, save, and share our posts.
And finally, volunteering your money is always appreciated! All donations to CAL are tax deductible through our fiscal sponsorship with Fractured Atlas. To donate in any amount, click here.
We welcome you to join us in our mission to build unity, solidarity, and equity among art workers in Los Angeles County in whatever way works best for you. If you have any questions, please reach out—we look forward to working together!
In solidarity
