May Day Community Fundraiser for
Contemporary Art League and The Artist’s Contract

Join us for our first ever fundraiser! Come celebrate International Workers’ Day and help us raise $5000 to fund CAL’s collaboration with The Artist’s Contract and our new project: STUDIO LOAN.

STUDIO LOAN meets the need for affordable, short-term studio space in Los Angeles and sets the groundwork for one of CAL’s long term goals: a cooperatively-owned community center that houses all kinds of support and services for art workers, including short term studio rentals.

As we get closer to bringing this project to life, we need your help! Come learn about STUDIO LOAN over snacks and drinks in solidarity with fellow art workers and supporters, and help us raise foundational funds for this meaningful project.

You’re invited! | May 1, 2024 | 6-9 PM
ICA LA | 1717 E 7th St | Los Angeles, CA 90021

CAL IRL @ ICA LA Thursday, April 25, 5-6:30pm

Join us for our next monthly working group CAL IRL @ ICA LA: April 25, 5-6:30pm. We hope you’ll join us as we work through our agenda. Listen in, or participate, if you’re called to! All self-identified art workers are welcome. Come early to see Scratching at the Moon—the first focused survey of Asian American artists in a major Los Angeles contemporary art museum. This gorgeous and thoughtful exhibition was co-curated by artist Anna Sew Hoy and ICA LA executive director Anne Ellegood. The ICA LA is located at 1717 E 7th Street, LA, CA 90021. The galleries will be open until 7pm, and admission to ICA LA is always free.

About CAL IRL @ ICA LA: For 6 months in 2023, this event was a monthly informal gathering for art workers to get together, talk openly about the opportunities and challenges we face in our life’s work, and build toward CAL’s long term goal of offering professional support, community services, and advocacy opportunities in a cooperatively owned community center. Join us, and get involved!

In Solidarity

Museums Moving Forward has a vision to “create a more just museum sector by 2023.” This “limited-life” collaborative effort among museum workers and allies is yielding long-needed research and data on the work lives of museum staff across the nation. Just this week, MMF announced their Art Museum Unions Index, an analysis of union efforts at private nonprofit art museums based in the United States. The index follows MMF’s 2023 Workplace Equity and Organizational Culture in US Art Museums report, an analysis of data from surveys completed by scores of participating museums throughout the US. Take a look at these fascinating reports and follow along with MMF as the organization continues to shed light on working conditions in our field.
